  • Barranco Oscuro Brut Nature 2008
  • Bodegas Barranco Oscuro is run by Manuel Valenzuela and is situated in Cadiar in the Sierra de la Contraviesa in the Granada region of southern Spain, 60 miles from the regional capital of Almeria. The 12 hectares of vineyards, at 1,400 metre (4.600 feet), are among the highest in Continental Europe and are tended strictly along biodynamic lines. Manuel specialises in cultivating unusual and ancient grape varieties, many of which have almost died out. This includes the rare Vigiriega grape which exists only in Granada and the Canary Islands and from which this excellent sparkling wine is made. Vivacious and vibrant, this makes for a wonderful aperitif.

A rich golden in colour with excellent bubble formation. Complex nose of bruised apples, sweet spices and yellow plums. On the palate, crisp and refreshing with excellent acidity and notes of pear, ginger and lemon citrus leading to a clean finish with mineral hints. The pronounced acidity makes this a great food wine. Try with grilled asparagus with jamón ibérico, smoked mackerel fishcakes or a mixed bean salad with goat's cheese.
