- Chateau Lagrange 2004, Saint-Julien
Chateau Lagrange is owned by the Japanese Suntory Group who purchased the estate in 1983. The company has invested a great deal of money and effort in a bid to improve the estate and the quality of its wines, with considerable success. There are 157 hectares in all, although only 115 hectares are presently planted up, including four hectares of white varieties. The vineyards are situated on two parcels of Gunzian gravel, which include the highest point in Saint-Julien and vines planted include 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot for the reds, and for the whites, 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Semillon and 10% Muscadelle. All the grapes are hand-harvested and this particular grand vin sees a fermentation period of up to 25 days before being aged in 60% new oak barrels for 20 months.
A dark ruby-red in the glass. Aromas of leather, plum, cassis and black cherry. On the palate, muscular and brooding with a juicy acidity. Packed with black fruit flavours. The tannins are apparent but harmonious and the finish has a dry edge. Drink now but will keep for a further 10-12 years. Great with braised shin of beef with mashed butter beans, entrecôte Bordelaise with a watercress garnish or pan-roasted
