- Domaine de l'Hortus, 'Bergerie de l'Hortus' Rouge 2010
Domaine de l'Hortus is owned and run by former agricultural engineer Jean Orliac, one of the leading lights of the Pic Saint Loup region situated north of Montepellier. He began in 1978 by renting a few hectares of vines but in 1980 purchased 55 hectares of barren land between the Pic Saint Loup and Montagne Hortus. Such was the work required on the estate that the first vintage wasn't released until 1990. Today there are 60 hectares producing pioneering reds and whites from the estate's remarkable all-wooden chai situated in the shadow of Montage Hortus. This particular red is a blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre and is lightly oaked.
A vibrant purple-red in colour. On the nose aromas of sweet cherries and herbs of the garrigue. The palate is balanced and fresh with subtle tannins and an excellent acidity. Look for further red fruit notes on the finish. An excellent food wine, this would pair well with poached chicken with saffron rice, caillettes de Languedoc (sausages served with pork liver and chard) or pigeon in a red wine sauce.
