- Domaine de la Chevalerie, Bourgueil 'Venus' 2010
This light and fruity red comes from the Bourgueil area of the Touraine region of the central Loire Valley. The 33 hectare estate has been in the Caslot family since 1640 and an excellent range of reds are produced from their cellar in the village of Restigne. Today the estate is run by 13th generation winemaker Pierre aided by his children, Emmanuel and Stéphanie. The vineyards are cultivated strictly along organic lines and the 13th century cellar is one of the largest in the Loire. Like all Pierre's wines, 'Venus' is 100% Cabernet Franc and is a vibrant, lush and balanced red that pairs particularly well with game dishes.
A clear ruby-red in colour. On the nose, aromas of raspberries, bell pepper and tobacco. The palate is lively and aromatic with plenty of red-fruit flavours and bitter red cherry notes. The acidity is pronounced and the finish crisp and clean. Try with a salad of pears, blue cheese and toasted walnuts, white bean and onion tart made from the local mojette beans or roast rabbit loin with artichokes and a chive vinaigrette.
