  • Montevertine, Pergole le Torte 2007
  • The 11 hectare Montevertine estate was founded by Sergio Manetti and oenologist Giulio Gambelli in Tuscany in 1967. By 1981, however, Manetti was finding the DOC Chianti regulations too restrictive (producers were not permitted to use 100% Sangiovese and were required to blend in white grape varieties), and therefore decided to withdraw from the Chianti Consorzio and produce a premium Tuscan wine from the Sangiovese grape that would reflect the true terroir of the region. Thus was created 'Pergole le Torte' which Manetti declared the first 'Super Tuscan' (although Antinori may dispute this claim). Today the estate is run by Sergio's son, Martino, who continues to produce great wines from the Sangiovese grape. This superb red is from late harvested grapes which are then fermented in cement tanks without temperature control, macerated on skins for 25 days and finally aged in Slavonian oak for 18 months with a further six in French Alliers barriques.

A vivid ruby in colour. Sweet red fruits on the nose with a hint of cassis and cherry jam. On the palate, earthy and ripe with notes of red plums and chocolate with a fresh acidity. The finish is lingering and spicy. A harmonious and elegant wine. Drink with fillet of beef with rosemary, garlic and girolles, roast leg of lamb stuffed with olives, bread, pinenuts and herbs or a simple chunk of Gorgonzola cheese.
