  • Poggio Argentiera, Lalicante 2007 (1/2 Bottle)
  • Poggio Argentiera is owned by agronomist Gianpaolo Paglia, born and bred in Maremma, and English marketing manager Justine Keeling. They bought the 6 hectare estate, situated near the town of Grosetto in southern Tuscany, in 1997 and immediately set about making Morellino di Scansano whilst at the same time planting new vineyards using local varieties such as Alicante. They are assisted in their efforts by winemaker Antonio Camillo and a modern winery and warehouse facility were added in 2002. The vines are grown organically on sandy soils only a few kilometres from the sea and experience a very precise micro-climate including hot temperatures and little rainfall during the growing season. This rare dessert wine (only 1,000  bottles made) is 100% late-harvested Alicante from old vines. After picking the grapes are transferred to a "fruttaio," or drying room, where air circulates through boxes containing the grapes After a month the original weight of the grapes has been reduced by approximately 30%. The grapes are then put into small, open, oak barrels with natural yeasts and after a short period, fermentation is arrested by taking the temperature down to 5°C. The wine is then moved into second year barrels for about 4 months before bottling.

A gorgeous inky-purple in colour. Notes of chocolate, elderflower and sun-dried tomatoes on the nose. The palate is expressive and spicy with finely woven tannins and a rich and lingering finish. Drink with good quality chocolate, fig tart or a slice of creamy gorgonzola cheese.
