- De Martino Legado Chardonnay 2010
The de Martino Family have been making wine in Chile's famed Maipo Valley for over 70 years and their vineyards are situated at altitudes of up to 825m above sea level, yet only 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The soils are made up of clay, sand and volcanic rock which in turn imparts a very distinct character to the wines. Everything is organic at De Martino Legado; yields are low and quality control ruthless. The Legado brand showcases specific varietals from some of the best wine growing terroirs of Chile, resulting in wines that express the true character of each region. This particular Chardonnay comes from the 13-hectare Quebrada Seca vineyard at an elevation of 230 metres above sea level. The vines benefit from the cooling fogs that creep into the Limari Valley from the Pacific Ocean in the afternoon and with less than 4 inches of rainfall per year leading to drip irrigation, the vines develop deep roots in the calcium-rich soils of the vineyard. The grapes are manually harvested at the end of March and following fermentation, the wine is aged in new French oak barrels and a further 6 months is spent in the bottle to develop its characteristic creamy texture.
A golden straw-yellow in colour. On the nose, elegant and expressive notes of grapefruit and banana. On the palate, full-bodied yet fresh with an excellent minerality and a brisk acidity. Creamy in texture, the tannins are well-balanced and the finish lingering. Great with braised pork with leeks and grapes, courgette salad with Taleggio cheese or poached salmon in a caper butter sauce.
