- Domaine Binner, Riesling K 2007
The Binner estate is situated in the small town of Ammerschwihr in the Haut-Rihn department of the Alsace. The estate was founded in 1770 and comprises of holdings in two of the most valuable growing sites in Alsace: around the Kaefferkopf Grand Cru and plots in Ammerschwihr. There are 9 hectares in total, of which 6 are under vine and the land is farmed biodynamically. The average age of the vines is 35-years although many are over 60 years old and some are approaching 100 years old. Grapes grown include Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Auxerrois and Muscat, all grown on steep slopes and on granitic soils which adds to the minerality and complexity of the wines. This particular Riesling 'K' (named after the Kaefferkopf vineyard) is from late harvested grapes and is unfiltered.
A medium straw in colour. Unsurprisingly for an unfiltered wine, it is also slightly cloudy. The nose is very earthy and rich with notes of green fruits and petrol. The minerality also shines through. On the palate, dry and refreshing with pleasantly tart citrus flavours and excellent acidity. Notes of pepper and elderflower. The finish is crisp and lingering. A characterful wine. Try with grilled lemon sole, Alsatian fish stew ('matelote') or a chunk of Cambazola cheese.
