- Domaine Le Roc Des Anges, Vin de Pays des Pyrenees-Orientales Blanc Vieilles Vignes 2007
Situated in the village of Montner close to the Spanish border and in the shadow of the Forca Real mountain, this excellent 22ha estate is run by Marjorie Gallet. The vines are spread over 43 separate parcels consisting of mainly flaky schist thereby encouraging good drainage and strong root systems. The 'Vieilles Vignes' is a combination of Grenache Gris and Macabeu and is fermented in foudres - old, large wooden casks designed to soften a wine rather than to impart oaky flavours.
A pale golden in colour. Aromas of white flowers and green fruits with a hint of aniseed. Dry yet full-bodied on the palate with concentrated stone-fruit and citrus flavours. Look for a slightly 'yeasty' note. The finish is concentrated and lingering. A classic accompaniment to 'anchoiade' - a paste made with anchovies, garlic. herbs and olive oil and usually spread on toast. Also try with a flash-roasted garlicky calamari salad or grilled sea bass served with fresh thyme and garlic.
