- Domaine Olivier Pithon, Vin de Pays des Cotes Catalanes Blanc 'LA D 18' 2009
This exciting 9-hectare domaine is situated adjacent to the great Domaine Gauby in the village of Calce in the Roussillon region of the Languedoc. Olivier Pithon is orginally from a wine making family from Anjou in the Loire and after spending some time in Bordeaux decided to settle in Calce in 2000 after being introduced to Gerard Gauby by his brother, a wine maker from Layon. The vines are grown strictly according to biodynamic principles and they are superb - elegant, complex reds; delicate, floral whites. Wines to be savoured. The 'LA D 18' is named after the road that passes by the vineyard and is a blend of Grenaches Gris and Blanc and spends 15 months in oak barrels. Only 3,000 bottles were made therefore stocks are limited.
A pale-golden in colour. Floral nose of apples, almonds and honeysuckle. Full-bodied and spicy on the palate with notes of fennel, olives and dried fruit. The finish is lengthy and the tannins are well integrated. Remains on the palate for a considerable time. Altogether a sensational wine. Drink with roast pheasant with bacon and celery, braised wood pigeon with Bearnaise sauce or sea bass with herb stuffing.
