  • Domaine Champalou, Vouvray Sec, 'Clos du Portail' 2007
  • Didier and Catherine Champalou established their 20 hectare estate in Vouvray in 1984. They grow exclusively Chenin Blanc grapes and are among the leading producers in the town. Didier tends the vines and Catherine oversees the cellar. Their wines are superb -  harmonious, restrained and a true reflection of the terroir. 'Clos du Portail' is a special cuvee released a few years ago and is made from a particular parcel of vines to be found behind the cellars. The grapes are manually harvested and pressed immediately. The juice is then put in double barriques (450 litre oak barrels)for 12 months to undergo fermentation before bottling. Only 300 cases are made, most sold directly from the domaine, so availability is limited.

A wonderfully aromatic wine with exotic tropical fruit scents. On the palate, weighty yet fresh with pronounced minerality. The palate opens up to reveal further smoky notes and a lingering finish. Absolutely gorgeous! Try with lobster ravioli, roast saddle of rabbit in a mustard and tarragon sauce or scallops poached in a ginger-scented cream sauce.
