- Domaine Laureau, Savennieres 'Les Genets' 1999
The appellation of Savennieres lies in the Anjou-Saumur region of the Loire valley, just to the south west of Angers. This is Chenin Blanc country, the wines being characterised by austere elegance in their youth and a pronounced minerality as they mature. Domaine Laureau is owned by Damien Laureau who moved to the region in 1999 and began making wine from just one small rented vineyard. Today he has 7 hectares of vineyards (still rented) split into 4 parcels near Epire. His operation is strictly biodynamic, the harvest is carried out manually and yields are low. The resulting wines are beautifully balanced and well structured with bags of the afore-mentioned minerality. 'Les Genets' is 100% Chenin Blanc (known locally as Pineau de la Loire) and would suit a fillet of wild salmon well.
A diamond-bright yellow in the glass. Aromatic tropical-fruit aromas suggesting apricot and peach. Excellent acidity on the palate with a balanced richness despite the low residual sugars. Notes of almond and grapefruit leading to a crisp and mineral finish. Fantastic food wine. Drink with rabbit in a white wine sauce, blanquette de veau or salmon trout steaks with a watercress sauce.
