- Rene-Jean Dard et Francois Ribo, Crozes-Hermitage Blanc 2009
The cult estate of Rhône natives René-Jean Dard and Francois Ribo operates from the village of Mercurol, to the east of Tain l'Hermitage in the northern Rhône Valley and produces some of the most outstanding wines in the region. They founded the business in 1984 and it was one of the first in the area to follow the biodynamic 'natural wine' movement. Today there are 8.5 hectares of vines split into 7 villages and they have to deal with with several different terroirs and soils. From their cellar (which, incidentally was nearly burned down in 2007 leading to the loss of much of their stock) they make subtle reds from the Syrah grape for immediate enjoyment, and elegant, spicy whites from Roussanne and Marsanne. This particular white is 100% Roussanne and was fermented in a combination of stainless steel tanks and oak barrels. A floral white, this pairs well with roast chicken.
A rich golden in colour. On the nose, classic Roussanne aromas of apricot, honey and flowers which open up beautifully in the glass. On the palate, rich and round with some subtle vanilla notes leading to a lengthy, spicy finish. Great with crab pâté. duck casserole with apricots or roast turkey with lemon and almond stuffing.
