- Cave de Saint-Etienne de Baigorry, Irouleguy Blanc 'Cuvee 'Andere d'Ansa' 2010
La Cave Coopérative des vins d'Irouleguy et du Pays Basque was founded in 1952 and is based in the town of Saint Etienne de Baigorry in the Irouleguy region of south west France. Starting out with just 60 hectares, the 140 members currently farm more than 180 hectares of vines of which 130 are AOC Irouleguy. Following rapid expansion in the 1970's and 80's, the company began selling wines under their own label and in 1982 opened a shop in the town. In 1997 an ambitious programme of renovations and improvements were embarked upon whereby the cellar and wine making equipment were completely overhauled. Today the cooperative produces an award-winning array of whites, reds and rosés from Gros and Petit Manseng, Courbu, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat grapes. The cuvee 'Andere d'Ansa' is a blend of 80% Gros Manseng and 20% Petit Manseng grapes manually harvested from vines grown on chalk soil. After fermentation the wine spends 2 months in oak barrels before bottling and works well with ossau iraty, the local goat's cheese.
A clear pale yellow in colour with green flecks. Aromas of crystallised lemons, mango and menthol. On the palate, dry and crisp with mountain-fresh acidity and a clean mouthfeel. The finish is short and sharp making this a great food wine. The aromatic nature of the Manseng grape ensures that this pairs well with Asian-style grilled prawns with lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves and ginger. Alternatively try with piperade basquaise or smoked trout kedgeree.
