  • La Cave du Vin Blanc de Morgex et de la Salle, Valle d’Aosta Blanc ‘Rayon’ 2010
  • Vin de Morgex is cultivated at an altitude of 1,300m , at the foot of Mont Blanc in the heart of the Valle d'Aosta on the border between Switzerland and Italy. This is the highest region from which wine is produced in Europe and Blanc de Morgex is an extremely ancient grape, imported by Vallese share croppers who arrived in the Aosta Valley in the 17th century. Today the grapes are cultivated under the characteristic stone pergolas that are a legacy from Roman viticulture. Low and supported by wooden poles, the pergolas scale the sides of the mountains just a few kilometres from Aosta between the regions of Morgex and La Salle. The vine owes its strength to its resistance to low temperatures; indeed it is common to see the vines covered with snow and ice at harvest time. The wine is made by the local cooperative headed by chief winemaker, Gianluca Telloli and is 100% Blanc de Morgex.

A straw-yellow in colour, with pale green nuances, its aromas evoke mountain herbs with notes of fresh hay. Further notes of lemon, almond apple and peach also fight for attention on the nose. The palate tracks these aromas but the crisp acidity is balanced with intense flavours. The finish is persistent with lingering flavours of pear and citrus. Great food wine. Try with veal cutlets with Fontina cheese, a salami and onion frittata or fonduta - the local version of fondue with Fontina cheese, egg yolks and white truffle.
