- Framingham Estate, Classic Riesling 2009
The boutique Framingham Winery is named after founder Rex Brooke-Taylor's ancestral home of Framingham, Norfolk, UK, and is situated at Renwick in the Marlborough region of New Zealand's South Island. Although the first vintage was not released until 1994, the vineyards had been in place since the early 1980's and in 1997 a new winery was constructed to allow the company to continue to focus on single varietals including Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Riesling from which this off-dry white is made. Planted on free draining river stone and alluvial silt, the Riesling vines give up a rich, juicy white which enjoys a relatively low alcohol level of 11.5%.
A delightful straw-yellow in colour. A fragrant, complex nose suggesting honeysuckle, jasmine, green tea and lemon citrus alongside a stony minerality. An intense and concentrated palate with balanced acidity and flavours of citrus, mandarin and stone fruit with hints of ginger and pepper. The finish is delicate with further mineral notes. Altogether a beautifully structured wine. Great with smoked goose and caramelized apples, grilled lemon sole with lemongrass butter or a simple bowl of peaches and cream.
