- Framingham Estate Pinot Gris 2009
The boutique Framingham Winery is named after founder Rex Brooke-Taylor's ancestral home of Framingham, Norfolk, UK, and is situated at Renwick in the Marlborough region of New Zealand's South Island. Although the first vintage was not released until 1994, the vineyards had been in place since the early 1980's and in 1997 a new winery was constructed to allow the company to continue to focus on single varietals including Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Montepulciano and Pinot Gris, from which this particular white is made. A significant amount of work is done in the vineyards to produce this Pinot Gris. Extensive crop thinning and leaf plucking are practised, giving low yields of grapes that have excellent exposure to sunlight. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermentation takes place via 2 different methods: 75% of the juice is fermented in steel tanks while the remaining 25% is fermented in old barriques to produce a rich and concentrated white that pairs particularly well with light pasta or stir-fry dishes.
A pale golden-rose in colour. On the nose, forward aromatics reminiscent of baked apple, pears and cream with some underlying mineral notes. The palate is generous with hints of apple strudel, pear, quince, dough and custard. The texture is rich and pleasantly oily with excellent weight and a good mouthfeel culminating in a creamy finish. Perfect with clam chowder, halibut with oyster mushrooms and crayfish sauce or linguine with a spicy pumpkin seed pesto.
